Notes on Yosemite Compatibility

Apple recently released Yosemite, Mac OS X 10.10. This is an exciting update with lots of great new features.

We’ve been testing with Yosemite for months, and are happy to say that all of the Divergent Media apps – ClipWrap, EditReady, ScopeBox and Phosphor work great. Just be sure you’re running the most recent version of each – if you’re not sure, select “check for updates” from the application’s menu bar.

There’s one, easily solvable issue we’ve seen on a few Macs that have been updated to Yosemite. The Yosemite installer sometimes removes a few files from the Library folder, including some files that are important for video production.

Apple has an installer to help with reinstalling most of these files – if you’ve got Final Cut Pro on your system, we recommend you download and run Apple’s ProApps Codec Package.

In addition, if you’re using the ScopeLink plugins with ScopeBox, you may find that Final Cut Pro X can no longer see the ScopeLink plugin. To fix it, you’ll just need to run the ScopeLink installer again. Just download a fresh copy and run it.

If you run into any issues, just let us know.

Announcing EditReady

We’re excited to announce the newest application from Divergent Media, EditReady. EditReady is the fastest and easiest transcoding application on the market, designed especially for professionals like you.

EditReady makes it simple to move between QuickTime-compatible formats. For example, EditReady can take an SD card full of 4K H.264 files from a GoPro HERO3+ and convert them to ProRes422 or DNxHD in a snap. Or, it can take the ProRes files from a Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera and generate easy to manage H.264 proxy files. It does this all without overwhelming you with options – we manage the hard bits, you just pick your format.

EditReady doesn’t overwhelm you with settings and formats you’ll never use. It lets you quickly preview your media, view and edit your metadata, and convert it to another format. In addition, you can apply LUTs to your video during conversion, to save an entire processing step within your post production pipeline.

EditReady does all of this while being the fastest transcoding tool on the market. It’s up to five times faster than Apple’s Compressor application, without sacrificing quality.

We’re putting the finishing touches on EditReady and will be shipping it soon. In the meantime, you can get a preview of it at NAB 2014, or add your name to our signup form to be notified when it’s released.

Mavericks support in ClipWrap and ScopeBox

Apple’s newest OS, Mavericks, is slated to be released soon and ClipWrap and ScopeBox are ready for the big day. We’ve been testing extensively with the new OS since it was announced in June. The existing versions of ClipWrap and ScopeBox support Mavericks, there is nothing you will need to do to after installing Mavericks.

Announcing ScopeBox 3.3 – now with Support for After Effects and Premiere Pro

Today we’re happy to release ScopeBox 3.3. The feature list for this release is small, but we we’re so eager to get this one feature into the wild that we didn’t want to stall it while we finish the other things we had planned. We call it ScopeLink, and it promises to drastically lower the costs for high end scopes yet again.

ScopeLink is a new technology allowing ScopeBox to monitor the output of compatible third party applications running on the same computer. Until now, software based scopes required a second computer and capture device when users wanted to monitor the output of their editing or compositing software. With the introduction of ScopeLink, users can directly connect ScopeBox to the timeline output of Adobe AfterEffects, Premiere Pro, or Prelude. Now the power of ScopeBox’s first class monitoring toolset is available to editors finishing in Premiere Pro, and After Effects artists creating broadcast legal compositions.

NAB 2013

NAB 2013 is fast approaching. We hope you’ve got your comfortable shoes ready, because it looks set to be another exciting show.

We’ve decided to forgo a booth on the show floor this year, and instead focus on the more intimate events that happen throughout the week. We’ll kick things off Monday night with the Media Motion Ball at the Monte Carlo. Tuesday night, we’ll be at the Las Vegas SuperMeet at the RIO.

In addition to those formal events, we’ll be at the Tao of Color mixer and KISS Mini Golf on Sunday evening.

We’ll be at the show each day, and would be happy to arrange private meetings if you’d like to talk through plans that involve our products. Otherwise, if you see us walking the show floor, be sure to say hi!

Humanæ project, a look at flesh tones

A few weeks ago I made shout-out to the Humanæ Project (http://humanae.tumblr.com) on our podcast. In the artist Angelica Dass’ own words: “The project development is based on a series of portraits whose background is dyed
with the exact Pantone® tone extracted from a sample of 11×11 pixels of the portrayed’s face. The project’s objective is to record and catalog all possible human skin tones.”

I decided to dig into these images in ScopeBox… and was surprised by what I found.
